Who is Jesus?
Jesus was a real person who lived about 2,000 years ago in the Middle East. Most historians — religious or not — agree he existed. He was born in a small town called Bethlehem, grew up in Nazareth, and spent roughly three years traveling, teaching, and spending time with ordinary people.
Christians believe Jesus was not just a good teacher or historical figure, but the Son of God — fully human and fully divine. They believe he came to earth to show people what God is like and to offer a way back to a relationship with God.
Whether you are just curious or skeptical, his words and life have shaped more of the world than almost anyone else in history. That alone makes him worth understanding.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
John 3:16 →What did Jesus teach?
Jesus taught a lot — but two ideas sat at the center of everything: love God, and love other people. He said these were the two greatest commandments. Everything else, he said, flows from these.
He taught that people matter regardless of their status, background, or past. He spent time with people that society looked down on — the poor, the sick, outsiders, and those considered moral failures. His message was that no one is too far gone.
He also taught radical ideas about forgiveness, generosity, and how to treat enemies. Much of his teaching is collected in what's called the Sermon on the Mount — a long teaching session where he laid out what a life guided by God's values actually looks like.
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
Matthew 22:37-39 →Why do people follow Jesus?
People come to faith in Jesus for all kinds of reasons. Some grow up in families that follow him. Others hit a hard point in life and find something in his words that makes sense of their pain. Some are drawn to his character — his compassion, his honesty, his refusal to look down on anyone.
At the core of Christian belief is this: Jesus died and rose from the dead. His followers believe his death was not a tragedy but a sacrifice — taking on the weight of human wrongdoing — and his resurrection was proof that death is not the end. This is what Christians call the gospel, which simply means "good news."
Following Jesus is less about following a set of rules and more about a relationship. Christians believe that God is not distant or indifferent, but personally interested in each person's life.
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28 →What is the Bible?
The Bible is a collection of 66 books written over thousands of years by many different authors. It has two main parts: the Old Testament, which covers the story of God and humanity before Jesus, and the New Testament, which covers the life of Jesus and the early Christian movement.
For Christians, the Bible is not just an ancient book — it is how they hear from God. They read it to understand who God is, how to live, and what their own lives are part of.
If you want to start somewhere, the Gospel of John in the New Testament is one of the most readable introductions to Jesus. It was written specifically for people who are just beginning to explore who he is.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Psalm 119:105 →How can I learn more?
The best next step is simply to read. The Gospel of John is a great place to start — it is one of the four accounts of Jesus's life in the New Testament, and it is written in a way that speaks directly to people exploring faith for the first time.

If you have questions — honest ones, hard ones, skeptical ones — that is completely okay. Many people who follow Jesus today started exactly where you are.
"Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you."
