When religious leaders asked Jesus which commandment was the greatest, He gave a clear, beautiful answer. If you’re new to faith or returning to it, this is where Jesus says to begin.
Jesus’ Clear Priority
Matthew 22:37–38 (WEB): “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.”Loving God isn’t a side topic—it’s the center. Jesus points us to a whole-life love: heart (desires), soul (identity), and mind (thoughts).
Deuteronomy 6:5 (WEB): “You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might.”Jesus roots His teaching in Scripture God’s people already knew: love has always been the foundation.
Love for God Overflows to People
Matthew 22:39–40 (WEB): “A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”Loving God and loving people belong together. Real devotion to God shows up in real care for others.
Mark 12:29–31 (WEB): “The first is, ‘Hear, Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God…’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”Why Love Comes First
1 John 4:19 (WEB): “We love Him, because He first loved us.”We don’t begin with our effort; we respond to God’s love shown in Jesus. The Gospel starts with what God has done for us.
How Do I Love God Practically?
John 14:15 (WEB): “If you love me, keep my commandments.”Love expresses itself in trust and obedience—choosing Jesus’ way in everyday decisions.
Matthew 6:33 (WEB): “But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well.”Put God first—before hurry, pressure, or fear. He knows your needs and cares for you.
Romans 12:1–2 (WEB): “Present your bodies a living sacrifice… Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”Let God reshape your thoughts and habits so your whole life becomes worship.
Simple Daily Practices
1. Begin the day with God: a short prayer and a passage from the Gospels.
2. Choose obedience in small things: truthfulness, purity, generosity, integrity.
3. Love a neighbor on purpose: encourage, listen, forgive, or meet a need.
4. End the day with gratitude: thank God for His love and note where you saw Him at work.
A Short Prayer
Jesus, thank You for loving me first. Teach me to love You with all my heart, soul, and mind—and to love my neighbor today. Amen.
